Asleep at the Wheel Accidents
Asleep-at-the-Wheel Accidents Can Have Fatal Consequences
Falling asleep behind the wheel can be blamed for hundreds of fatal crashes each year and many accidents involving injuries. It's not unusual for drivers to nod off, even briefly. Forty-nine percent of all men and 26 percent of women say they have fallen asleep while driving, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Overall, 37 percent of the U.S. population admits falling asleep at the wheel at least once in their lifetime, the NHTSA reports.
Motorists Have a Choice to Pull Over Before Falling Asleep at the Wheel
Asleep-at-the-wheel accidents are preventable. Drowsy motorists have the choice to pull over to the side of the road. The lack of attention paid to the road when drowsy or sleep deprived or is as hazardous as operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
While motorists who choose to drive while sleepy are not intentionally acting maliciously or with premeditation, their decision nevertheless is negligent and irresponsible.
