DePuy Artificial Hip Recall

DePuy Artificial Hip Recall Affects Thousands of Patients

Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Orthopaedics division announced a recall of two hip repair devices on Aug. 26, 2010: DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing system and DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System.

The DePuy artificial hip recall includes 93,000 ASR hip implant systems. Did you have hip surgery after 2003? If you did, you may be entitled to compensation. It's important to consult with an experienced attorney. Call or email Metzger Wickersham. We can discuss your legal options. It's important to act quickly. A delay may affect your rights.

DePuy reported that the recall was issued after an unusually high number of people who received the ASR hip system experienced pain and other symptoms and needed second hip replacement surgery, or a revision surgery. DePuy said data shows that one in eight patients who received either ASR hip system needed to have a revision surgery.

The following are symptoms that may indicate a serious problem:

  • Pain
  • Fractures
  • Walking problems
  • Loosening of the implant

DePuy Artificial Hip Recall - What Can Be Done

Any hip implant patients experiencing adverse symptoms should contact their doctors immediately. It's also important to consult with a Pennsylvania DePuy artificial hip recall attorney.

Even if you are not experiencing any painful symptoms, if you had hip surgery after 2003, you should make an appointment with your surgeon who can determine if your device is working properly. According to information posted on its website, DePuy says a scan or X-ray of the hip may be required as well as a blood test. If the doctor detects a serious problem, a second surgery may be needed to replace your implant.

Twelve (12) percent of patients who received the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and thirteen (13) percent who received the ASR XL Acetabular System needed corrective surgery within five years, which reportedly is a failure rate twice as high as the industry average.

DePuy has notified the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the product recall.

For those who need services associated with the recall, DePuy will cover "reasonable and customary costs of monitoring and treatment."

Before accepting any compensation or entering into an agreement, it's imperative that you consult with an attorney. At Metzger Wickersham, we are prepared to analyze your case and recommend the best course of action, which may mean pursuing a DePuy artificial hip recall lawsuit.
