Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch
Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch Linked to Severe Injuries
The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch, developed by Davol Inc. (a subsidiary of C.R. Bard Inc.), was designed to improve the healing process in abdominal surgery patients, and to make hernia operations easier. The Kugel hernia patch was FDA approved on February 9, 2001. However, problems with the patch emerged in 2002 with reports that the recoil rings in some of the models of the hernia patch were breaking. Some patients were facing severe injuries due to complications from the patch, including:
- Bowel perforations
- Bowel obstructions
- Chronic enteric fistulae (irregular connections between the intestines and other organs)

Manufacturer Issues Three Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch Recalls
Davol tested the devices and found design and manufacturing flaws. In response to the results of its testing, Davol issued a Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch recall of its extra large model in December 2005. Subsequent reports had linked the hernia patch to fatalities and more than 80 injuries. At the prompting of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Davol issued two more Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch recalls. Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch lawsuits already have been filed on behalf of injured patients.
