Motorcyclists are perhaps the most vulnerable operators on the Pennsylvania roads. With only inches between them and the pavement, motorcyclists need to take the appropriate safety precautions. It could save a life. Here are some tips to reduce your risk of accidents and injuries:
- Wear the right attire. Leather pants, coats and gloves all protect your skin should you get in an accident. Leather works like a second skin to protect you from road rash and the elements. Also important are goggles and face protection.
- Inspect your bike for any visible damages, including loose bolts. A quick inspection could save your life.
- Check your tire pressure. Adequate tire pressure allows you to safely and easily take corners and turns.
- Wear a helmet. Helmets save lives by protecting your head. Most importantly, they can help prevent serious traumatic brain injury if you are in a motorcycle accident and hurt your head.
How Motorcycle Safety Precautions Can Save Your Life
According to studies, motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a collision than are the occupants of the other vehicle. Motorcycle riders are five times more likely to sustain some injury than are the passengers in the other vehicle. Taking proper safety precautions may reduce your risk of injury or death.
Pennsylvania Helmet Law
Pennsylvania law requires that any person who operates or rides a motorcycle must wear a helmet unless he or she is 21 years of age or older and has been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years or has completed a motorcycle safety course approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Anyone operating a motorcycle on a learner's permit must wear a helmet regardless of age.
