NuvaRing
NuvaRing Side Effects - What You Need to Know
NuvaRing is a vaginal contraceptive device that is designed to prevent pregnancy by releasing synthetic forms of estrogen and progestin into the blood stream over a three-week period. The synthetic hormones can thicken the user's blood and raise the risk of strokes and other potentially severe side effects, including, but not limited to:
- Heightened risk of breast cancer
- Increased risk of gallbladder disease
- Bleeding irregularities
- Blood clots
- DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
- Heart disease
- Benign liver tumors that may rupture
- Depression
- Anxiety
If you are using NuvaRing and experiencing any adverse side effects, contact a doctor immediately. Some of the symptoms of serious health problems linked to NuvaRing use include pain in the chest or lower leg, or pain in the abdominal area. Other serious signs include:
- Ankle swelling
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Vomiting
- Sudden onset of fever
- Headache
- Vision problems

NuvaRing Lawsuits Already Filed
Drug maker Organon, a division of Schering-Plough Corporation, introduced NuvaRing in 2002. About 7.5 million prescriptions were written in 2009. NuvaRing lawsuits linked to adverse health effects and fatalities have been filed.
NuvaRing includes a new combination of hormones intended to reduce unwanted side effects. Nuvaring and other "third-generation" contraceptives may have a risk of blood clots and stroke that is twice as high as the risk associated with the second-generation contraceptives (most birth control pills).
A nonprofit advocacy group called Public Citizen has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban third-generation contraceptives like NuvaRing. The FDA so far has not taken any action.
