Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) often is caused by what appears to be minor trauma. A related condition is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). These conditions are characterized by persistent limb pain related to trophic and vasomotor changes. RSD and CRPS commonly is found in the arms and legs and may be connected to injuries sustained from high-speed impact, such as an auto accident.
Sometimes RSD and CRPS injuries are not noticed, but become severe upon a subsequent injury. Patients who developed RSD and CRPS previously but were able to cope with the discomfort may later suffer a relatively minor injury, such as a fall down. Suddenly RSD and CRPS victims find they are unable to cope with increasing pain levels.
CRPS symptoms include dramatic changes in the color and temperature of the skin over the affected limb or body part. These symptoms are often accompanied by intense burning pain, skin sensitivity, sweating, and swelling. Tissue injury frequently triggers CRPS I, a term that describes all patients with the above symptoms but with no underlying nerve injury. Patients with CRPS II experience the same symptoms but their cases are clearly associated with a nerve injury. Some victims may be unable to work because of their pain and suffering.
CRPS and RSD can strike anyone, regardless of age or gender, but it appears to be more common among young women.
