Zelnorm
Zelnorm Recalled After Being Linked with Heart Problems
Zelnorm, marketed by Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp., is used for short-term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women, and for treatment of chronic constipation in both men and women, aged 65 years or younger.
The generic name for Zelnorm is tegaserod maleate, which has been linked to an increased risk of serious heart problems and even death. Based on the risk associated with the use of tegaserod, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Novartis to stop marketing Zelnorm in March 2007. Novartis subsequently suspended the marketing and sales of Zelnorm in the United States.
If you experienced any serious side effects from taking Zelnorm, you should seek emergency treatment.
Some of the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke include:
- Severe chest pain (angina)
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Sudden onset of weakness or difficulty walking or talking
How Zelnorm Works
Zelnorm works by increasing the action of serotonin in the intestines. When used successfully, Zelnorm can reduce abdominal discomfort and pain, constipation and bloating.
The FDA determined that the benefits of using Zelnorm did not outweigh its serious risks. In addition to being linked to heart problems and stroke, Zelnorm has been linked to ischemic colitis. The FDA has also received reports of deaths associated with the use of Zelnorm.
