Winter is upon us, and along with the cold weather comes slippery and icy
conditions on the roadways. Poor road conditions are a factor in thousands
of accidents each year. According to PennDOT's Crash Facts and Statistics,
slippery road conditions contributed to 10,236 crashes in 2014, resulting
in 44 deaths.
This winter has already seen numerous crashes as a result of inclement
weather in PA. According to news reports, on December 9th, Wilby Henriquez-Vazquez
was killed on Interstate 78 when he was struck by a tractor-trailer driven
by Pablo Silva. Henriquez-Vazquez was standing outside his disabled vehicle
alongside the roadway when Mr. Silva lost control of the tractor-trailer
and it jack-knifed. The tractor-trailer struck the disabled vehicle then
struck Mr. Henriquez-Vazquez. Unfortunately, Mr. Henriquez-Vazquez did
not survive. It has been reported that snow and ice were on the roadway
at the time of the crash.
