Texting and Driving
Texting and Driving Is Extremely Dangerous
Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of auto and truck accidents in America. Distracted driving takes shape in many forms, but cell phones are especially dangerous distractions to drivers. Using a cell phone to text is one of the most common activities of distracted drivers.
The level of distraction caused by texting while driving has proven to be deadly. Studies from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that texting while driving boosts the risk of a car accident 23 times more than if a driver was not texting. Some studies have compared the risks of texting while driving to drunk driving.
Many states have either passed or are considering passing legislation against cell phone use while driving. Pennsylvania recently became the 35th state to pass a "texting-while-driving ban." The new law, which makes texting while driving a primary offense, will go into effect on March 8, 2012.
Although a number of laws are already in place nationwide, many people still put themselves and others at risk in order to text while driving. A new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that nearly 20% of all drivers acknowledge sending texts or email from behind the wheel. And that number spikes up to 50% of drivers 21-24 years old. According to the NHTSA, distracted driving contributed to about 3,092 traffic deaths in 2010. As these types of accidents continue to occur, everyone needs to be aware of just how dangerous texting while driving can be.
