Pennsylvania Snow Removal Laws for Motor Vehicles

With the first winter storm of the season behind us and more inclement weather sure to come, Pennsylvania drivers should be aware that failing to remove snow and ice from their vehicles could not only result in a ticket, but also a fine.

In Pennsylvania, drivers are required to remove any obstruction from their windows before traveling on the roadways, including snow and ice. Failure to remove snow and ice from windshields and side and rear windows could result in a ticket of $25.00. (see 75 Pa.C.S. 4524)

While most drivers do remove snow or ice from windshields and windows, many do not remove it from other areas of the vehicle, such as hoods and roofs. If a driver is traveling down the roadway and the snow or ice dislodges from the vehicle and hits another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious injury, the driver could be subject to a fine up to $1,000.00.

Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Law:

§ 3720. Snow and ice dislodged or falling from moving vehicle.

When snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury, the operator of the vehicle from which the snow or ice is dislodged or falls shall be subject to a fine of not less than $200 nor more than $1,000 for each offense.

During the winter months, make sure to protect yourself and those around you by removing all snow and ice from your vehicle before heading to your destination.
