Mother Killed and 2 Children Survive in Collision with Tractor Trailer

A 27-year-old mother was killed and her two toddlers were rescued on the morning of Monday, July 24th, when the car she was driving collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 72 in Penn Township, Lancaster County.

The victim, who has been identified as Melody M. Irizarry, was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner. Several rescuers pulled her toddlers, ages 18 months and 3 years, from the back seat of her four-door sedan and tended to the children before ambulances arrived.

According to police, the older child was taken to Hershey Medical Center in critical condition; the child remains in serious but stable condition after having surgery. The younger child is being treated at Lancaster General Hospital.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 47-year-old Carlos Rodriguez of Lancaster, was not reported to have any major injuries.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the truck was traveling south on Route 72 and Irizarry’s car was traveling north when the car crossed the center line. However it has not yet been determined what caused the car to cross into incoming traffic.
