Reuters Investigation Reports Johnson & Johnson Knew of Asbestos in Baby Powder Products for Decades

Reuters recently released the findings of a special investigation into Johnson & Johnson’s knowledge of possible asbestos contamination in its talcum powder products. The investigation focused on Johnson & Johnson’s internal documents regarding possible asbestos in their products, specifically, Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower.

For the past several years, Johnson & Johnson has been defending over 10,000 lawsuits alleging their products caused cancer in the consumers who used them on a regular basis. Johnson & Johnson has steadfastly denied any correlation between their products and cancer and was also quick to denounce the Reuters investigation.

Reuters’ report states that documents dating back to the 1950’s showed evidence of contaminants similar to asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talcum products. Multiple reports from the 1970's also found evidence of asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talcum products according to testing conducted by different laboratories. Continuing the next several decades, asbestos and asbestos-like particles were found in a number of talc deposits that were used as sources for Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products.

In response to the Reuters investigation, Johnson & Johnson issued a press statement alleging that the Reuters article was “one-sided, false and inflammatory.” Reuters stood by its investigation, stating that the report was based on Johnson & Johnson’s own documents.
