Defective Airbags & Seat Belts
We're the Pennsylvania Attorneys Who Can Help
Manufacturers install seat belts and airbags to protect drivers and passengers, but sometimes these safety devices contribute to injuries. Defective seat belts and airbags can also cause more damage than the actual impact with the other vehicle or object outside your car.
Please note: When in the best interest of the client, defective seatbelt cases may be referred to other law firms.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident and you believe your seatbelt or airbag did not function properly, talk to a Harrisburg product liability attorney at Metzger Wickersham about your options.
Seat Belt Defects & Failure
Seat belts can be defective in a number of ways. The webbing of the seat belt may not be strong enough and may tear during an accident. A buckle may become unlatched during a collision, or a defect may prevent the buckle from ever latching at all; sometimes even a lack of tension may mean that the seat belt doesn’t actually hold the driver or passenger back against their seats during a collision.
Common seat belt defects:
- Inertial unlatching - when the seat belt unlatches during an accident
- False latching - the seat belt feels and looks latched, but isn't
- Failure to lock - the seat belt remains loose during a collision
- Defective webbing - the seat belt rips apart during the accident
Airbag Defects & Failure
Common airbag defects include failing to deploy during an accident or deploying unexpectedly while the car is being driven. In the largest auto recall in history, airbag manufacturer Takata recalled tens of millions of vehicles for an issue that caused the inflator to explode, shooting out shards of dangerous shrapnel that could cause injury or death.
Common airbag defects:
- Failure of the airbag to deploy
- Airbag was delayed or deployed prematurely
- Airbag doesn't have tethers or tethers don't work
